Syndicat des Vins Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence
The wine area corresponds to the western part of Provence. It has calcareous clay and stony soils, sandy soils (often gravelly with molasse and sandstone), stony clay groundmass or sandy-silt soils.
Wine-making in Aix dates back to the 6th century B.C., when grapevines were introduced into Provence by Phoenician sailors from Asia Minor. In turns, the Romans, monks and the Counts of Provence then sought to identify the best soils and to preserve and improve traditional techniques. Recognition for the wine area came in 1985 and for some of France's great regional rosé, red and white wines. Seigneurial estates and charismatic winemakers are today maintaining the reputation of the major wines of Coteaux d'Aix-en- Provence, but all local participants are involved in a strategy of qualitative development.
Depending on the land's position, next to the sea or inland, the wine area is expressed in a variety of ways. But the wines all share a strong, well-developed and even sophisticated style. The reds are generous, fragrant or full-bodied, with a memorable aroma the rosés, with their excellent reputation, are supple and light, floral and fruity and the whites are graceful, filled with finesse and a remarkable aromatic potential.
