Prieuré Sainte-Victoire
This priory is built on the site of an ancient hermitage from the 5th century, at the time of Saint Cassian, probably on the ruins of a Roman temple said to be dedicated to the victory of Marius in the 2nd century AD.
Wherever you are coming from, you will be impressed by the compact mass of Sainte Victoire rising up from the Aix countryside.Paths of varying difficulty lead from Vauvenargues to the summit where there is still a chapel and the ruins of a monastery. After walking for an hour you will come to the Chapel of St Victoire.
Built in the 17th century, the priory was home to Carmelite monks and then abandoned. Formerly used by hermits, it owes its restoration to Les Amis de la Ste Victoire, who have made it into a refuge.
