Château Montaurone
In the 13th century, Château Montaurone was part of a Templar commandery. In the 19th century, the estate was a "departmental model farm" with a rural school providing general and scientific education with a focus on agriculture.
Today, the estate's main activity is the production of wine and olive oil.
Situated at an altitude of 200m and rooted on a limestone plateau, the vines have to dig deep into the stony soil to find their nutrition.
The climate, dry and hot in summer and very cold in winter, favors the ripening of the grapes.
Quality has always been a priority for the Decamps family, owner-growers, despite the size of the estate. Mainly classified as Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée d'Aix en Provence, the 91-hectare vineyard is fully classified as AOP Coteaux d'Aix en Provence and IGP Méditerranée. The olive groves, meanwhile, are classified as AOP Huile de Provence, with over 2,200 trees on 8 hectares.
The estate opted for organic farming in 2011, and became fully organic in 2016. The majority of production is devoted to rosé wines, followed by reds and whites.
The grape varieties are Grenache, Cinsault, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon for red and rosé wines. White wines are made from Ugni Blanc, Vermentino and Clairette. The wines are vinified using the traditional method, in concrete and stainless steel vats.
The olive grove extends over 8 hectares. A variety of trees are planted. These include mainly the Aglendau and Salonenque varieties. The oil comes exclusively from olives picked on the estate. They are then transported to the mill, where they are
mill, where they are crushed and processed. After that, bottling is carried out directly at the château by the harvesters.
