Aix au Grand siècle

The town of Aix-en-Provence is famous today for the harmony and elegance of its architecture, its musical ambition and its law courts
All these features took root in the 17th century and could be seen in the construction of new districts and mansions, and in the development of artistic excellence in such widely varying fields as music, painting and the decorative arts. The aim of the Musée du Vieil Aix is to highlight the richness and variety of artistic and cultural expression in the period: some one hundred works from the town’s heritage collections, which have seldom or never
been seen, will be on display in the Hôtel d’Estienne de Saint-Jean. Through this event, the Musée du Vieil Aix is joining and partnering with the Granet Museum for its exhibition Jean Daret (1614-1668), a king’s painter in Provence. For the occasion, major restoration work has been carried out on the artist’s masterpiece, the Hôtel de Châteaurenard staircase with its trompe-l’oeil painting. This iconic example of Aix heritage is reopening at last and is now part of the Musée du Vieil Aix collection.

Opening of “Aix au Grand Siècle” and inauguration after restoration
of the trompe-l’oeil staircase of the Hôtel de Châteaurenard painted by Jean Daret in 1654: Saturday June 15 at 12 p.m.
