In the Pays d’Aix, the Way of Saint James follows the path of the old Roman Via Aurelia which once linked Roman Italy to ancient Gaul. This European Cultural Route, included on the UNESCO world heritage list, skirts Montagne Sainte-Victoire and crosses Aix-en-Provence enabling travellers to discover the town.
This route can be travelled all year round, but spring and autumn are the best seasons. In summer the route can get quite busy and some sections may be closed due to fire risk (in high temperatures and strong winds).
Referenced as GR 653A, the signage and maintenance of the route are managed by wardens approved by the French Hiking Federation.
